Originally constructed in 1961, the Venice Pavilion served as a community recreation and cultural facility on Venice Beach. The area known as 'The Pit' evolved into a legendary gathering place for artists, skaters, musicians, and creative expression. Following the Pavilion's demolition in 1999-2000, a portion of the historic walls was preserved and eventually became the legal public art space known today as the Venice Art Walls.
Venice Beach is more than sun, surf, and skate culture, it's home to the most iconic graffiti scene in the world. We explore the fascinating history of Venice Beach graffiti, from its underground beginnings to its rise as a globally recognized form of artistic expression. Discover how local artists transformed public walls into vibrant canvases, the cultural movements that shaped the neighborhood, and why the Venice Art Walls continue to attract talented street artists from around the world.
