Program Funding May be Cut June 1, 2008

The Venice Art Walls Program is in jeopardy of ending as soon as July 1, 2008 due to potential funding cuts by the City of Los Angeles. The program is currently funded in equal parts by ICU Art and funds secured by Councilmember Bill Rosendahl’s (CD11) Office. We have been informed that, due to the pending City of LA Budget crises, we may not be receiving any funds from the City beyond June 1, 2008. Although we appreciate the funding that has been given to the program so far, we feel it is the City’s responsibility to continue funding this important program. You can encourage Council Office 11 to continue funding for the program by sending emails to Arturo.Pina@lacity.org. You can encourage the Department of Recreation and Parks to fund the program by sending e-mails to the General Manager of the department at Jon.Mukri@lacity.org. Without a program in place to manage the area, the walls are in jeopardy of being removed.

Venice Art Walls Pilot Program will be extended through June 2008

ICU Art is proud to announce that the Venice Art Walls Pilot Program will be extended for six more months. The current program began on June 3, 2007. The program was considered a trial program, and was meant to conclude on December 1, 2007. The Program’s Advisory Board voted in November to continue the program. The program has been considered a success by many of the Venice area stakeholders and representatives on the program’s Advisory Board. The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks which oversees the Art Walls Program has said they will extend the program Right of Entry Permit, which will allow the program to continue. Funds to continue the program through June of 2008 have been pledged from multiple sources. We will have more information on these developments posted shortly.

Photos to be Provided by Venice Paparazzi for Area

Venice Paparazzi has been selected as the official photo agency of the Venice Art Walls. The partnership between ICU Art and Venice Paparazzi has been extended through June 1, 2008. Edizen Stowell of Venice Paparazzi and her team of event photographers will be documenting the work on the walls on Sunday afternoons or early Monday morning. Select pieces will be uploaded to the Venice Art Walls site and may be uploaded to the www.venicepaparazzi.com site as well. This is an important project, as it will help us to document and highlight some of the high-quality artwork that occurs on the walls as part of the current permit program. This will also help us to determine which pieces are being painted mid-week without a permit, so that we can address this problem from an informed viewpoint.
