Art Auction ResultWe raised over $12,000 at the Venice Art Walls Auction on June 3rd. This translates into about five months that the walls will be open beyond July 1st 2008. July 1st was when the City funding for the program ended. These funds were raised from the event entrance fee, the raffle, T-shirt sales and of course the sale of over fifty great works of art donated by a bunch of generous and talented artists. Thank you to all that attended or supported in any way. Thank you again for the generous support of the G2 Gallery. Click here to see photos from the event. City of LA – Bill Rosendahl’s OfficeCouncilmember Bill Rosendahl of City Council District 11 has informed us that the City of Los Angeles through CD11 will be contributing a minimum of $15,000 towards the Venice Art Walls program for Fiscal Year 2008/09. Although this is less than half of what his office contributed for Fiscal Year 2007/08, we are very happy. ICU Art has been working with Arturo Piña and Mike Bonin from Rosendahl’s office all year, and they have been great supporters of the program. Due to an extreme budget shortfall for the City of LA, funding was completely cut to the program going into the new fiscal year. We are glad that people made an effort to express their support for the current program to the Council Office.
Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood Council – Neighborhood Improvement GrantsWe are proud to announce that ICU Art has been selected for funding for a $2,400 grant to produce and install permanent signage in the Venice Art Walls area. We applied for these funds and were awarded approximately half of our original grant request, similar to nearly all of the grant requests that are receiving funding. We are happy to have been ranked 8th overall within a field of over 100 applicants. So many of the grant requests were worthy of funding, and they all seemed like great programs.
More Funding Needed!Although we now have commitments to cover the bare minimum of funding that has been covered by the City of LA this past year, we are still in great need of additional funds to support the program. The funds raised so far only cover the most basic expense related to the program. The program is in need of funds for a youth program with instructors for minors, we need more signage and another used spray can disposal unit, and we need new laminated permits and T-shirts for the On-site Supervisors. We also need funding to help us apply for more long term grants and funding for next year. Please go to “Donate” to make a contribution. Venice Art Walls Report Now AvailableYou can now download a report on the first six months of the Venice Art Walls Program covering the period from June 3, 2007 through November 25, 2007. This report was presented to the program’s Advisory Board earlier this year. We welcome comments and suggestions on this report and on the program during the period between November 2007 and now. Please send comments to stash@veniceartwalls.com. Click here to download report. Photos to be Provided by Venice Paparazzi for AreaVenice Paparazzi has been selected as the official photo agency of the Venice Art Walls. The partnership between ICU Art and Venice Paparazzi has been extended through June 1, 2008. Edizen Stowell of Venice Paparazzi and her team of event photographers will be documenting the work on the walls on Sunday afternoons or early Monday morning. Select pieces will be uploaded to the Venice Art Walls site and may be uploaded to the www.venicepaparazzi.com site as well. This is an important project, as it will help us to document and highlight some of the high-quality artwork that occurs on the walls as part of the current permit program. This will also help us to determine which pieces are being painted mid-week without a permit, so that we can address this problem from an informed viewpoint. |
